This is Eczema, aka Atopic dermatitis
And this is severe eczema.
What is Eczema?
Eczema is a skin problem, often called as rash, in everyday language. Medically it is also know as dermatitis or atopic dermatitis.
It is by far, most commonly, seen in small children, newborns, and infants. But adults are also affected by it. Its just not paid much attention in adults, unless it becomes very severe.
How to know if you are having eczema?
Eczema symptoms are basically itching, followed by a rash in a particular region, dry and thickened skin in the affected area.
Most commonly these patches will be found around the face (cheeks), hands and legs, the inner part of the elbows and knees.
If you scratch these affected areas, it may burn and sometimes get infected leading to further worsening of the affected skin part.
How is it treated?
Almost everyone, tends to first try moisturize the skin, which is not wrong. So, oils, moisturizers, calamine lotions etc, are often the first line of self-treatment.
Next when you see it is becoming a repeated problem, and visit a doctor, and will be treated with over-the-counter allergy medicines like Allegra/Xyzal etc (anti-histaminic medicines, these medicines control the sensation of itching)and probably some steroid ointments that will help control the allergy problem.
However, many a time, eczema tends to go down for some time and then come back again. And everytime it comes back, it is more severe, making the lives of the sufferers miserable. Like in this person.
It all started like nothing
45 yr old Mansukh* (name changed) was affected by Eczema for 5-6 yrs.
It all started as a minor rash which he hardly paid any attention to. If it bothered him too much, he would just go to the chemist and buy some ointments which would ‘clear’ everything up in just 1-2 days.
He had no idea of the medicinal ingredients of the ointment, nor was he interested in it. He was satisfied that it worked for him.
Occasionally, it would flare up more than usual, and this was when he would pay a visit to the general practitioner round the corner of his locality. The doctor would also prescribe him a similar ointment along with giving him a shot and some additional medicines.
Not a simple rash
Everything seemed to be going smooth until around a couple years ago, when Mansukh noticed that he was having frequent recurrence of his ‘rash‘.
He had no idea that it was eczema. He believed it was some infection he could be having due to excessive sweating and environmental reasons.
Not only was the eczema appearing repeatedly, it was also worsening. What used to be a dry eczema, had now turned into wet eczema.
It was time for some serious treatment
Mansukh realized he was having a serious condition and decided to consult a skin specialist. The dermatologist explained his condition and prescribed him stronger and more potent medications and ointments to manage the situation.
But he warned him that the condition cannot be cured, and can only be controlled. So, Mansukh was left with no other option, than to use the medicines when it occurred, and take utmost precaution to prevent a recurrence.
He spent all he had
Sadly, even after taking the precautions and being on the specialized treatment, his eczema returned with increased increased vigor every time.
He tried changing doctors, changing medicines. he even tried home remedies, and other modes of therapy anyone advised, but nothing seemed to work.
Things just kept worsening
The eczema had by then turned very severe. His legs were swollen from the inflammation. The skin of his legs looked raw and red. There was a glazed appearance of the skin due to the fluid oozing out of the skin.
If there is no medicine to get me out of this, just kill me!
It itched him like crazy, but he couldn’t dare touch it, let alone scratch it. If he did try to rub it, it would burn for hours, that he would literally cry out of the pain.
It pained more in his heart, than his skin
If that was not enough pain, he was further broken by the fact that his friends and relatives had started avoiding him. They stopped visiting his house, coming near him, let apart touching him. All this, for the fear of getting infected by his disease.
Little did they know, that eczema was not a contagious disease. In fact, if the society had been a little more affectionate and caring, then the sufferings of people like Mansukh, would be half of they actually suffer.
It was not only Mansukh that was affected by this problem. His family could sense his sufferings as their own. They tried their best to help him. They would ask everybody they knew for any good doctors, when actually they had met all the best doctors they could afford.
Anything for our loved ones
One day, someone told a family member that Homeopathy is very effective in skin problems and that they should try it. Having tried the best allopathic treatment and other alternative treatments, the family thought they could not leave any stone un-turned to help their father come out his misery.
On the day they visited Dr. Piyush Singh Agnivanshi, he was busy attending patients in his small compact clinic, and there was a long queue of patients waiting their turn to meet the doctor. It seemed like that they would have to wait for a long time. But they couldn’t afford that.
He couldn’t even move. If he did his skin would crack and bleed
Mansukh had been brought to the clinic seated on a chair as he couldn’t walk. If he moved even a little, his skin would break and blood mixed with a sticky fluid would ooze out of the skin. The family was requesting the patients in line to allow Mansukh to see the doctor first. And it broke out into a commotion.
Dr. Piyush came out to see what was all the noise about and realized the situation. Just as he was going to tell the family member to wait in queue, he heard Mansukh moaning in pain and the state of his legs. He agreed to see to let Mansukh come in next while trying to convince the other waiting patients.
But Mansukh was in no state to move any further. And the doctor was convinced that he might as well attend to the patient in the waiting room itself.
What can a Homeopath do, when the best skin specialists couldn’t help
Just when Dr. Piyush was about to attend to him, Mansukh realized this was a homeopathic clinic, and was agitated. He shouted at his family for bringing him to a homeopath, when even the top skin specialists had given up on any further recovery.
The family members could sense the doctors irritation with Mansukh’s behavior, but he let it pass and focused on comforting the patient.
Though, history taking and examination in a homeopathic consultation is quite elaborate, Dr. Piyush could not afford to do that in this case and managed to take the most characteristic symptoms of the patient and made a quick prescription. He gave a medicine to be taken then and there and a few other medicines to be taken at home for the next 5 days and advised to follow-up.
On the fourth day, Dr. Piyush was called by Mansukh’s younger brother. He was excited and mentioned that they couldn’t believe that the condition could be relieved without any application of ointments.
Mansukh was also oddly satisfied. Allopathy, Homeopathy, who cares. As long as it helps me, i don’t care what I am taking.
From then, he followed-up every 7-10 days for a month and the improvement was satisfactory. It was not gone. But it was good enough.
By the 3rd month, the skin had healed enough to allow new growth of hair on the affected region. Usually, when the deeper layer of the skin is affected, hair growth on that area also is affected as hair follicles are located in the deeper layer of the skin. All it took was a few sweet pills two times a day.
New skin. New energy. New life.
For 1 yr, Mansukh followed the medicines religiously, during which he was slowly taken off the medicines step by step and completely stopped by the end of 14 months.
Around March/April of 2018, Dr. Piyush had been asked for an interview in a local channel, for which Mansukh was invited. And this was how his legs looked at that time.
Today, he is healthy, happy and fit enough to earn for his family. Not just that, the same people who stayed away from him due to his skin disease, now ask him for reference for their own health problems.
Moral of the story
There are thousands of people, who suffer from skin problems. Their biggest worry is what will others think about me. And this adds to their stress and causes their body’s immune system to become weaker.
If there is one thing we can do to help the affected, it can be only showing some love and affection. Be informed of the problem. Understand it yourself and make others understand too.
Start by being the change
Don’t be afraid to mingle with them, talk to them and when you are sure it is not a contagious skin disease like Eczema, even touch them gently. Show them you care about them more than their skin. When in doubt, just ask.
If you ask me how homeopathy works, I will tell you honestly, I don’t know how. There’s is still a lack of concrete evidence. But that’s not my job. My job is to treat my patients and relieve them of their suffering in the best way I know. That is my Dharma. As far as how it works, that is the job of the scientists, and I will leave it to them to tell us how it works. Because one thing is for sure. IT WORKS!
